Transportation and Storage of Ethylene Oxide
Several critical factors affect the quality of ethylene oxide:
Temperature: The boiling point of EO is 10.7°C. Elevated temperatures significantly accelerate polymerization, making low-temperature storage and transportation ideal.
Moisture: Water is a primary reactant in EO hydrolysis (forming ethylene glycol). Moisture can also indirectly promote polymerization.
Oxygen: Oxygen reacts with EO to form peroxides, which are undesirable impurities and potential safety hazards.
Catalysts: Metal ions such as iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) are strong polymerization catalysts, rapidly causing EO polymerization and container clogging.
ISO Tank
Based on the above analysis, ISO Tanks are currently the best method for EO transportation. Key advantages include:
Insulation: A 100mm+ thermal insulation layer or vacuum barrier helps maintain low temperatures during transit.
Material: The inner chamber is made of 304/316 stainless steel, eliminating iron ion contamination.
Inerting: Before filling, high-purity nitrogen purges the tank to remove oxygen.
Nitrogen Blanketing: After filling at the production facility, the tank is sealed under ~4.2 bar nitrogen pressure to block moisture and air ingress.
Thus, ISO Tanks incorporate targeted measures to counteract all major EO degradation factors.
Stainless Steel Cylinders
Used for transporting or storing small quantities of EO, these cylinders lack insulation and typically do not use nitrogen blanketing.
Aluminum Alloy Cylinders
High-quality 6061 aluminum alloy cylinders can extend EO shelf life due to:
High thermal conductivity, dissipating localized polymerization heat.
Dense, uniform oxide layer, providing excellent isolation.
Carbon Steel Cylinders
Strongly discouraged—China may fully phase out carbon steel containers for EO storage/transport due to severe polymerization risks from iron catalysis.
